An HRG UK pedal-powered smoothie machine proved one of the most popular attractions when HRG UK employees joined HSBC staff at their offices in Canary Wharf, London, to commemorate World Environment Day (WED).
Using the environmentally friendly drinks maker was the brainwave of HRG UK Business Manager Kate Dolman, who explained: “HRG wanted to help HSBC raise awareness of World Environment Day amongst their employees. HSBC has recently taken a number of steps to reduce their environmental impact footprint globally, including the introduction of Group-wide, three-year environmental targets to reduce energy and water use, to decrease waste production and to cut carbon dioxide emissions.
“As a supplier, we wanted to see how we could do our part in this process, starting with the World Environment Day activities.”
A roster of willing volunteers from HRG UK’s HSBC team from Holborn Gate and Canary Wharf manned the smoothie maker throughout the day. Each of the team took turns riding the specially converted bicycle and encouraged the HSBC staff on site to take to pedal power to blend their own preferred flavour of smoothie.
Other activities conducted by HSBC on WED included internal presentations by environmental experts and senior Bank executives, roadshows, environmental awareness campaigns/promotions and local community events. Bank employees were also encouraged to make personal pledges to reduce their environmental impacts.
“It was a very ‘fruitful’ day,” concluded Kate. “The smoothie maker was a fun way to help raise awareness of a serious message.”
World Environment Day, first launched in 1972 and commemorated each year on 5th June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

Have pedals, will travel: (left to right) Arti Patel, Edyta Sicinska, Vanessa Pearn, Sabrina Tande and Kelly Thomas of HRG UK join HSBC Head of Group Travel Tony Pilcher and Fleet and Travel Manager Lee Whiteing as they get to grips with a pedal powered smoothie maker on World Environment Day.
